Successful Transitioning

March 26th, 2008 by Danny

Curt Gwartney shared some inspiring statistics during the Gathering in Orlando. In the past 7 years, 100 students have graduated from their youth group. Sadly, 19 students are not in church, but thankfully 81% are active in ministry. These statistics are well-above the national trends being reported.

Curt shared with the group some of the practices and goals that may be influencing these results:

• Students are allowed to remain part of the youth group after graduation

• Give students something of significance and worth

• Focus on making disciples, from the moment a student joins the group

• Make sure the leader is walking with Jesus (can’t lead them any closer than you are)

• Constantly challenge the youth to walk with the Lord (and keep them accountable)

• Be aware of what is going on in the students’ lives (read the clues, deal with the issues)

• If students are moving away to college, contact the BSU, college ministry, and local church (Let them know about the student and contact information. Connect the student with these people.)

• Promote Christian colleges (encourage students to attend at least one year)

• Continue to be their youth pastor and mentor

• Allow college students to have opportunity to influence Jr. High & Sr. High students

• Setup youth group students with adult prayer partners in the church

• Supply opportunities for students to fall in love with Jesus

• Worship with adults (youth group does not have a separate teen worship service)
