Why Would You Do Such A Thing?!
Humanistic psychology recognizes two types of motivation: pain or pleasure. Experiments with rats and chickens demonstrate that animals avoid pain and seek pleasure. [Wow, who would have imagined that?!] Unfortunately, such research has been misapplied to interpret human behavior, as if humans were animals. [Another false premise of evolutionary thinking.]
There is a third motivation for human behavior: love. People will do things out of love regardless of the pain or any prospect of pleasure.
Even though David’s mighty men would not have battled the Philistines to satisfy their own thirst, they willing took that risk for their king. We see from their example that love motivates great accomplishments.
Their devotion to their king motivated their actions. They left the safety of the group and struck out on a mission to fulfill the wish of their king. It was not a command or even a request, just the longing of his heart. Love is the greatest motivation of all.
