A Drink from the Well
1 Chronicles 11:10-19 records the exploits of some of King David’s mighty men. These were some extraodinary individuals, not only in strength and skill, but also in determination and devotion. On one occasion, David and his soldiers were taking refuge in a cave outside his hometown of Bethlehem, which was occupied by the Philistines.
David may have longed for the simpler days of his childhood as he looked out toward the city. He had walked in and out of the gate with ease. Perhaps he had stopped at the well countless times for a cool drink after a long day of shepherding sheep. Now he was shut out of the city of his fathers.
It was probably an absent-minded comment, just a thought that came into words–”Oh that someone would give me a drink from the well at the gate of Bethlehem.” But three of David’s mighty captains heard this request of their king. That was all it took.
I can imagine the secret glances these three shared as they caught each other’s eye and quietly withdrew. They were eager to fulfill even the slightest wish of their king. May we aspire to be servants of such devotion.
