A Proper Concept of Meekness

August 6th, 2007 by Danny

There is a common misunderstanding of meekness. Typically, people misinterpret meekness as weakness. Scripture gives a different perspective on that qualtity.

The Biblical examples of meekness show men of such strength of character and such total confidence in God that they did not have to stand up for themselves.

Numbers 12:3 reports that Moses was the meekest man on the face of the earth. This man who stood before Pharoah and the children of Israel with the power of God in his hand and on his lips was anything but weak.

In the New Testament we are also presented with a picture of the ultimate of meekness in Jesus Christ. The Scriptures attest to His meekness, yet we see Him fashioning a whip and driving the moneychangers out of the temple. He openly confronted the hypocrisy and false teaching of the religious and political leaders.

We also see Him hanging on the cross and being chided to prove Himself with a demonstration of His power. But He would not entertain their wishes. He followed the will of His Father.

As with both Moses and Jesus we see meekness defined–meekness is having all the power of heaven with nothing to prove.
